Speaker - Carmen Lishman, M.Sc., Shorebird Researcher

Talk Description - Join us for a talk about the Magellanic Plover (Pluvianellus socialis), one of the world's rarest shorebirds. Found only on the remote coasts and steppes of southern Patagonia, there are likely fewer than 500 individuals worldwide. Carmen Lishman studied this species in the early 2000's and many local conservation scientists are now leading the effort to protect it in a rapidly changing environment. The speaker will share firsthand insight into this extraordinary bird and the innovative, community-based efforts currently underway to save it. About the Speaker - Carmen Lishman's love of nature conservation began with her unique upbringing as the daughter of Bill Lishman, the man who pioneered ultralight-led migratory bird conservation. Carmen's ornithology and ecology studies have taken her from the Arctic to southern South America. She continues to support international conservation efforts as an associate and trustee member with Biome International Conservation Fund of Canada.
